Large National Financial
Institution - President's Club
Maui, Hawaii
Four months prior to the annual President's Club event, the
financial institution's senior management decided to explore
opportunities for a team building event that would give back
to the community on the island of Maui. The bank expected it
would have approximately 240 people taking part in this team building event.
There were a number of challenges to overcome in the planning of this activity. These included:
- Limited number of non-profit organizations able to provide suitable projects for groups of volunteers
- Lack of experience by non-profit organizations in working with incentive trip winners
- The volunteer activity needed to be outside and completed in a morning
- The incentive group winners and their guests needed an experience that would be complementary to the overall tone of the rest of the event
- The unknown physical abilities of the winners and their guests.
In addressing these challenges, we found four non-profit organizations with five projects that could be completed in a morning. These activities included building a small rock dam, painting buildings, planting hedges, and pruning and weeding gardens.
The results were amazing. All groups finished their projects in record time and were able to do additional projects at each site before leaving for a catered lunch overlooking the ocean.
The post event survey results showed that 31% of the attendees
felt the community volunteer event was the "best part
of my overall trip experience" and 59% said the activity
added value to their trip experience.
A few of the survey comments included these:
"Community service is far better than team building
events of the past."
"The community service activities were the best form
of teambuilding activities we have ever done. This was very
worthwhile and participants felt good about what they had
contributed."
"The community event was terrific."
"The community service component was a great team
builder and really consistent with the company's values.
I recommend keeping it."
"I thought the community service project was an excellent
idea and well received by the member organizations. I would
hope that it would be part of future program events."
